dean campbell elected as fellow of the aaas

andrew g. campbell, dean of the graduate school and a professor of medical science, and susan short, director of the population studies and training center and a professor of sociology, were elected by their peers as fellows of the american association for the advancement of science (aaas), the world’s largest scientific society. the new fellows will be formally recognized in a virtual ceremony to be held in february 2021. campbell was recognized for his scientific research as well as his “administrative leadership, and service to increase the full participation of all in science.” read more.

the covid-19 public health crisis has had a serious, ongoing impact on colleges and universities across the nation, students enrolled at brown, our broader campus community, and multiple aspects of university operations and finances. among the many challenges are the disruption of the ability of many graduate students to conduct research and fieldwork, and the more limited professional opportunities for new ph.d. graduates that are a result of the financial impact of the pandemic on higher education. we write with an update on support for doctoral students at brown and to inform you of steps that are being taken to ensure that we can best assist currently enrolled students as they complete their degrees. read more.

student research: stay-at-home orders significantly associated with reduced spread of covid-19, study finds

across the globe, covid-19 has infected more than 18 million people to date and has killed hundreds of thousands — and the united states has been hit especially hard. although the u.s. comprises just 4.2% of the global population, it accounted for approximately 33% of all reported infections by the end of april. however, the majority of u.s. states eventually imposed stay-at-home orders, and those orders appear to have significantly slowed the spread of the disease for the nation as a whole.

these findings, co-authored by joe silva, a phd student in health services research, along with a state-by-state breakdown of how quickly covid-19 spread before and after lockdown orders, were published in the journal of infectious diseases on saturday, aug. 1. read more.
